The Wadsworth Atheneum

The Wadsworth Atheneum, first opened in 1844, and is a rich part of Connecticut’s history. University of Hartford students can see its vast collection of art for free when they show their university of Hartford id. It is the oldest public art museum, and has five different buildings. The Wadsworth Atheneum has a collection of over 45,000 pieces ranging from early B.C 4000 B.C all the way up to the most contemporary of modern art.
Drawing from memory is the museum’s contemporary art exhibit. They also have exhibits that include pieces reflecting Connecticut history. The main exhibit now is called Picasso, Dali, and the surrealist vision. It has a collection of surrealist pieces by many artists. it is displaying 70 of our own works and we have over 100 loans that cover the whole breath of modernism and surrealism. There are also surrealist films running on loops in the exhibit. This exhibit will be here until December 31.
The museum also hosts art films, monthly parties with free drinks, and meals in the café. The museum is open Wednesday through Friday from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm and on Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. For more information visit the museums website at http://www.wadsworthatheneum.org/.
